The new barn kitchen

For those of you who have been heavily involved here at the woods, you might remember our old kitchen… think industrial and cold! Well, I’m thrilled to say that is no longer the case!

During January, whilst our team hibernated and recovered from Christmas frivolities, our wonderful team; Jake, Dan and Nick set about demolishing the kitchen, it was time to say goodbye. Walls were taken down, shelving removed, and the hideous fluorescent lights were thrown away (hooray!) While we were all meant to be resting and recuperating, the demo team did incredibly, and before long we were painting walls and thinking about where all the spices would live.

Jake’s genius meant we managed to save all the previous fixtures from the kitchen, give them a little TLC and repurpose them. Along with our new (old) shelving and sinks, and worktops, a new lick of paint was needed. Dan and Emily had been watching Downton Abbey, which may or may not have heavily influenced the colour chosen for the new kitchen…

It seemed only right that to really complete our posh new kitchen, we needed some pretty special tiles…Adele Scantlebury, a local print maker and ceramist, has loving made our wilderness wood tiles for a few projects now, but this project is the most we’ve ever commissioned! A beautiful tessellating pattern of handmade tiles inspired by the Alhambra, made by Adele, and installed by our newly appointed resident tiler Flo, they finished the kitchen off wonderfully.

One of the best things about the renovation has to be the wood burning stove! Emily and Dan have been in love with their Esse stove for years now, so it seemed only fitting to have one in the new barn kitchen too. A wood fired, oven and stove top, with a back boiler, keeping the radiators in the barn toasty, and providing an all-important homely vibe. The stove has been put through its paces already, and I can happily say, it can definitely cope with the amount of jacket potatoes consumed.

Thanks to everyone who helped finish off the kitchen, we love you! The hometeam are thrilled to have a new cosy kitchen to call home.
